Around 22 months he called himself Nikolau, at 23 months Nikolaus - and at 24 months Nikolaus Weidmann Wieland!

…. started going to the toilet

Around 23 months, Nikolaus started being aware of "when he was doing it" (peeing or the heavy kind). At 24,5 months, he proudly says "Bæsje" when he wants to go to the toilet for something serious, and has not had a "stinky diaper" for two weeks.

…. went sailing

At 2 years, with neighbors Peter, Oscar and Jakob and aupair Astrid.

…. went fishing

At 2 years, with grandfather Jørgen in Malvik. He was very exited!

Comment

Sirkus Krone!

From 6 weeks -> too heavy!

Sitting in Peters hand and balancing with both arms straight out! He always smiles when gets to balance like that!

Where is the light?

From 7 months à now

On this command, Mamma Kristin taught Nikolaus to point at the light source, which he did with great enthusiasm long before he could talk!

Eskimokuss!

From 8 months

That is, "kissing" by rubbing nose to nose with someone. Peter learned him to do this, and with 8 months Nikolaus started giving us an Eskimo-kiss when we asked for one!

Der flieger (the flyer)

From 4 months to 9 months

With both arms straight out, and arms and feet above the ground balancing only on his belly - making a "brrrrrrrrrr" sound with his lips. Just like flying an airplane!

Brrrrrrrr

4-13 months

Saying the brrrrr-sound without moving his upper lip (since 4 months, still does at the age of 13 months)

 Techno-dancing

14 months
-> now

With fists going up and down in vertical movements, knee bend included and a darling smile. He starts his dance as soon as some active music is turned on….. Started doing it at about 14 months

Doing the Flugzeug (airplane)

From 12 months

Daddy Peter holding him by one arm and one leg and flying kamikaze jet with him high up into the air.
Nikolaus loves it!

Wow

From 16 months

Putting his thumb up and saying "wow" when something great has happened!

Cactus

From 18 months

His hair is put straight up when wet, making a "punk" comb

Nikolaus' food & drink

Held the bottle (with breast milk) and drank alone

4 months  old

First noen-breastmilk food & meal

He started eating Nestle rice&banana porridge or corn porridge before bedtime when he was 4 months old

Diet with 6 months old

Porridge at noon&nights, a try of potatoes or carrots in the afternoon

Started eating alone

He started eating bredcrumbs and crackers alone at the age of 6 months

Started drinking water from sealed cup

At the age of 6 months. At the age of 7 months he picked up and held the cup and drank alone.

Stopped getting breast-milk

12,5 months, without protests (he was not very interested at the end)

Diet at 13 months

Eats everything, but is especially fond of all red fruits: cherries, strawberries, red currants, raspberries, tomatoes - and grapes

Diet at 19 months

Eats everything, including his daily two teaspoons of cod liver oil. Favorites are rice porridge, pasta with mild sauces, pancakes, fish balls/puddings (Norwegian speciality), yougurt, fruit of all kinds - excluding mango, chocolate (which he does not get very often), bread with liver paste or cheese spread, white cheese - and boiled eggs. When he gets something he likes, he responds with a cheerful "nam nam".

Diet at 24 months.

Nikolaus is a real sweet tooth, and loves it when he gets cakes, cookies or chocolate. He can eat 3-4 servings of ice cream and still crave more. He also loves cheese and butter - butter he would prefer to eat plain out of the box, but is not allowed to…. He eats basically everything, but is not too keen on plain meats, rather prefers them served manufactured like hot dogs or fish cake. Favorite bread spread is "Prim"!

In addition to above: "Tæj" (three in Norwegian), "det" (that in Norwegian), "das" (that in German), "hei" (hello in German and Norwegian).

 Language at 24 months.

Nikolaus now speaks sentences. "Hvor er grønne toget mamma?" (Where is the green train mummy). "Nå blir det bra Astrid" (Now everything will be OK Astrid). "Mamma komme hit" (Mummy come here). "Pappa er på jobben liggesykkel" (Daddy is at work (with) recumbent). Since he started speaking sentences, he has mostly spoken Norwegian. But he has a good vocabulary of German and understands everything you say to him.

Nikolaus knows the name of many different flowers and birds. He knows the colors in both languages, and the names of anyone who is close to him. He actually has an incredible memory of people and their names- even those he met a long time ago. A useful capability!

Favorite toys and activities

Age

Toy

Comment

4-8 months

Wurmi

A colorful worm (se pictures) he received as a birth gift from aunt Siri and uncle Sigurd and Jørgen. It could rassle, squeak and crunch - and was nice and soft. In the yellow face there was a red nose, just like a nipple. This nipple was always especially popular, along with the blue tentacles.

Baktus

A small grey elephant that rested in his bed from the day he came home from the hospital. Kristin received Baktus as a present from Peter when Nikolaus was born. The first months Nikolaus was not interested, but around the age of 4-5 months he discovered Baktus and was the first thing he grabbed hold on to when we put Nikolaus to bed!

Frau Wildners toy

A plastic (to Peters disappointment) rassel in bright colors. In one end a bell making a loud super noise, and in the other end a yellow ring to bite on to. In the middle nice rings in different colors that can be touched and moved and shaken. The one rassel he seems not to get tired of!

10-12 months

Our telephone books and CD's

Within reach of Nikolaus, they were always pulled out of their shelves, and the pages of the telephone book torn out. At the age of 12 months he slightly lost interest (the CD's were in the meantime moved out of reach)

Fibbi the Frog

A lego frog that spits water if you press down the button on top. Nikolaus' favorite bathing toy.

Soft rings

A soft pole with rings of various sizes and colors that you put on the pole. The rings all have different rattle sounds. Nikolaus really enjoyed them, and was pretty clever at getting them onto the pole.

Bimbo and Bambine

Large toy elephants, the "parents" of Baktus. They are in moms and dads sleeping room, and Nikolaus throws himself enthusiastically at them whenever he gets the chance!

12-14 months

Duplo

Lots of fun with those Legos!

Swimmingpool from Oma

Simply because Nikolaus loves to bathe and splash, and the "blow up" swimming pool is a favorite now in the summertime

Wagon from bestemor

Wagon Nikolaus can walk behind (Brio). He not only walks behind, but sets himself into the carriage.

Balls!

Balls of all kinds. He loves to throw a ball around, and crawl after it. That "ball" was his first word is a token of his admiration of these fantastic things.

Animal books

Animal "pointing" books is his favorite academic adventure.

Our wakeup radio

Which he has learned to turn on and off. Whenever he turns it on, he stands at our bed and "dances" to the music.

Putting things into and out of boxes.

All variations…….

18-19 months

Duplo

Still lot of fun with those legos

"Gyngehest"

Riding horse, what the English name is I do not know…..

Speedy 1

Bike made by dad. No pedals, but his feet works just fine

His sled

Excellent fun when it snows

His hammer and hammer board

A piece of wood with wooden nails that you hammer from one side to to the other, then the same all over again.

Balls - of all kinds

Always fun to play with

A box with wooden objects and matching holes

Nikolaus loves the game of putting the right object into the right hole.

Plastic animals

Present from his aupair Astrid. He just loves them, and playes with them every day

Books

His present favorites are pointing books with "objects outside", and "objects inside", a book about a rabbit and his easter feast, and a book about Emma and her baby brother

Simple songs, riddles and rhymes

Favorites include: "With fingers" (Mit Finger), Hoppe hoppe reite, Lille Petter edderkopp, Hode skulder kne og tå and Bake kake søte.

24 months

Duplo

Still a lot of fun with thos legos

Brio train

He loves it when we set up his wooden railway, and eagerly helps in building it. Driving the trains and loading them is also a lot of fun.

Football

He has a good kick, prefers his left foot though.

Tricycle

His tricyle now has pedals. Favorite his putting it at the top of the hill in our driveway and driving full speed against the garage, where he puts his feet down to stop the bike.

Books

Before bedtime, he has the patience to cool down with a book and being read for. Favorites now are "Molly the mice (learning colors, numbers and opposites", "Larven aldri mett" (The still hungry caterpillar) as well as the German books

Songs

When being sung for by mummy, the favorites are "Fola fola blakken" and "Jeg vil bygge meg en gård". Daddy's favorites?

Jumping

Nikolaus love to jump off rocks, stairs - anything at a decent height above the ground.

Being outside in general

Nikolaus is a real outdoors lover. He always wants to play outside when he gets the chance to.

Playing in the sand

Making "sand cakes" - and then destroying them, and digging holes, is a never ending enjoyable activity

Running

Running full speed, he loves to demonstrate the ability of his tiny legs

Climbing

Show him a rock, and he will climb it

Studying worms, insects and snails

Any tiny moving object is utterly fascinating for Nikolaus. Snails, spiders, ants, bees, beetles….. He has learned to blow on any insect - not hit it - to avoid him being stung. He has also been taught that worms and snails should be moved to the compost.

Swings

Nikolaus loves to swing, outdoors - or indoors in his daddy's hammock.

Traveling with moving objects.

Sailing or rowing a boat, driving a car or bicycle, driving the tram or bus or train - or flying: if you give he the chance to go, he is utterly happy to be on his way. He has hours of patience when sitting in a car. When we try driving in the evening - hoping that he will sleep - that is mostly unsuccessfull…..
